Booklist Review

Stating that there is no ``typical'' participant in drug activity in the U.S., the author offers a good overview of drug use, looking at kinds of users and the substances that are used and abused. He discusses drugs in the workplace, including use by workers responsible for public safety-transportation, nuclear power plants, physicians, etc.-and by sports and entertainment stars. He also examines the drug problems of women, highlighting the prevalence of prescription-drug addiction; cites studies about drug use among young people; and takes a look at inner-city drug use and dealing. In conclusion he holds up as signs of hope the governmental (national and local) war on drugs and push for drug education. Facts are fairly well documented within the text, and a list of seven books for further reading, directory of state agencies, and index are appended. Gr. 7-10. SE. 362.2'93 Drug abuse [CIP] 87-13259
