All CEOs, managers, supervisors, training professionals, and educators must be able to effectively recruit, train, manage, and promote a culturally diverse work force. Unfortunately, few of them have been adequately trained to do so. Effective management of diversity is good business. It takes effective communication, conflict resolution, and the creation of an inclusive organizational culture to succeed. This comprehensive book helps administrators better understand the problems they face and how to deal with them by dispelling the myths and facing the realities of cultural diversity.

Drawing on numerous examples of successful diversity initiatives, the book gives the reader a balanced view of distinct diversity interventions. Cross-cultural training programs are critiqued, along with specific methods for assuring quality in-service training activities. Self-administered quizzes, surveys, and critical incidents are included to allow the reader to gain self-insight and self-improvement. African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Asians, women, older workers, employees with disabilities, foreign workers, and majority cultural groups are discussed in great detail. Theories and laws, as well as behavioral, cognitive, and affective strategies are among the topics presented.

Includes bibliographical references (p. [233]-252) and index.

CHOICE Review

Prolific author Henderson (Univ. of Oklahoma) has produced an outstandingly useful work on managing diversity. This solution-oriented volume provides managers and human resources professionals with concepts, skills, tools, and the motivation to use them to effectively champion organizational transformation. Drawing upon law, the literature, case studies, and experience, Henderson offers solid suggestions for using new tools to confront workplace issues ranging from irritating communication habits to hate-motivated acts of violence. His illustrations of explicit, work-related values common within varied cultural groups are among the best argued in the literature. Self- and organizational-assessment tools provide insight and, along with the clear case histories documenting a productive emphasis on profitability issues, provide strong impetus to action. Diversity is a broadly human issue, and the inclusion of chapters specific to disability, age, and sex widen the issues appropriately. The focus is on observable behavior, enabling sound personnel policy development and use of performance assessment tools to incorporate diversity management in an efficient and effective form. Numerous tables and charts; appendix. For business schools, practitioners, and human resource professionals, as well as managers and students in these fields. General; upper-division undergraduate through faculty; two-year technical program students. L. M. C. Abbott; California School of Professional Psychology
