"The ABC-CLIO Companion to the Civil Rights Movement traces the struggle of black Americans against oppression, racism, and bigotry in the United States. This expansive, one-volume encyclopedia is designed as an easy-to-use references tool for the general reader." "The concise entries cover key events, landmark state and federal legislation, important concepts, civil rights leaders, and stubborn obstacles in the way of freedom. The book spans the highs and lows of our nation's civil rights history, from the work of NAACP cofounder W.E.D. DuBois to the terrorist tactics of the Klu Klux Klan; from the timeless clarity of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" speech to the strained reasoning of the Supreme Court's "separate but equal" decision in Plessy v. Ferguson." "The book's A-to-Z entries are carefully cross-referenced to direct readers to related topics. A subject index provides quick access to the contents and the bibliography inspires further reading. A detailed chronology of events from 1619 to 1993 sets the movement in its historical context. Illustrations and photographs complement the fascinating, easy-to-read narratives." "A well-organized volume that addresses not only the people, but the complex issues related to the topic, The ABC-CLIO Companion to the Civil Rights Movement is an asset for anyone interested in learning about our citizens' quest for racial equality."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. CHOICE Review

The third in ABC-CLIO's series on key issues in US history, earlier volumes of which treated the labor movement and women in the workplace. Essentially an encyclopedia, Grossman's book deals with the civil rights struggle of African Americans from the end of the Civil War to the present. Some 364 alphabetical entries (and 18 cross-references) are enhanced with 53 illustrations and accompanied by an index, an unannotated bibliography, and a chronology of events. Librarians who compare it with the earlier Encyclopedia of African-American Civil Rights (CH, Dec'92), however, will hesitate to acquire it since its shortcomings are substantial. Entries are both fewer and less extensive than those of the Encyclopedia and lack the latter's short bibliographies. Legal cases are cited in an abbreviated form that makes access difficult. Finally, The Civil Rights Movement ignores organizations like the ACLU and the American Jewish Committee that played a large part in the cause, but were not specifically focused on African Americans. The result is a certain narrowness of view for a reference work. In all, not a bad effort, but not the best choice for a college library. P. L. Holmer; Southern Connecticut State University
