CHOICE Review

Abell and Braselton offer an interesting and useful view of both differential equations and Maple V, but not as a stand-alone introduction to either subject. Their book's principal strength is its integration of Maple into the discussion of differential equations by providing clear, step-by-step examples that really do help to explain the topics being discussed. Its greatest drawback, however, is that it offers the reader little more of a learning experience than these examples. As far as could be determined, the text contains no exercises of any sort. If one feels that providing an opportunity for readers to think for themselves is an important part of learning, then this book will look very much like a cookbook. But even a cookbook may be very useful as a reference, and this book plays this role well. It is an excellent guide to what Maple can do for someone interested in expanding a basic knowledge of differential equations. Finally, it is noted that although theorems and definitions are clearly and accurately stated, there is little discussion of why these are true and/or useful. Undergraduate through professional. J.
