CHOICE Review

A look toward the future of higher education from the president of the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges since 1981, and a respected author. Parnell writes from the perspective of someone who, in his words, has "gone from cow chips to potato chips to computer chips." What will be the major forces that shape the nation and the larger world during the last decade of this century, and how will they affect and be affected by higher education? This is Parnell's broad agenda and he covers it well, if conventionally. He looks at population growth and change, economic development, technology, the emerging global community, and then at how colleges and universities can respond to these changes while confronting their own challenges and difficulties--faculty shortages, increasing operational cost, and the growing disaffection of the "at-risk" population. He sees a future in which colleges will more and more be called upon to help solve local and national economic problems, fuse liberal and technical learning, help more minorities move into the economic mainstream, and contribute to a revitalized sense of civic learning. There are many useful perceptions but few flashes of real insight. Adequate notes and bibliography. General readers and graduate students. -L. S. Zwerling, New York University
