School Library Journal Review

Gr 9 Up‘Beginning with a historical overview of the awareness of the ozone layer's importance and recent changes in it, Newton continues with scientific explanations of how it is being depleted. Also included are brief biographies of people involved in the study of ozone and in the politics of its protection. Many primary sources are quoted. Although dealing principally with the assumption that the ozone layer is an essential aspect of the natural environment, there is discussion of the ideas of those, such as Rush Limbaugh, who do not believe there is a problem. An excellent, up-to-date bibliography and glossary round out this fine, informative title that will benefit researchers.‘Eva Elisabeth Von Ancken, Trinity Pawling School, NY (c) Copyright 2010. CHOICE Review

This small volume is concerned with one particular atmospheric chemical reaction: the depletion of stratospheric ozone by ultraviolet radiation catalyzed by chlorofluorocarbons. (There is little or nothing said about other ozone problems such as smog, or other UV-catalyzed reactions such as with DNA.) The introduction reviews the stratospheric ozone reaction at about the level of high school chemistry. The rest consists mostly of lists: a list of significant events ("chronology"), 1801 through 1994; a list of 29 individuals who have "participated in the discussion," with their "biographical sketches," James Anderson through Henry Waxman; a directory of interested private and governmental organizations; and an extensive, annotated bibliography of books, governmental reports, films, and videos. One major and most useful chapter, "Data, Opinions, and Documents," includes excerpts from the protocols of the World Plan of Action (Washington, 1977), the Vienna Convention (1985), the Montreal Protocol (1987), London Amendments to the Montreal Protocol (1990), and the 1990 Amendment to the Clean Air Act. Extensive glossary; list of acronyms and abbreviations; excellent index. Upper-division undergraduate through faculty. R. S. Platt Jr.; Ohio State University
