School Library Journal Review

Gr 7 Up-- Using many case studies as examples, Moe focuses on the reasons behind eating disorders and offers possible suggestions for dealing with them. Modern terminology is employed with citations from a variety of works about codependency and dysfunctional families. Among specific topics discussed are emotions and eating disorders, suggestions for dealing with them, and sources of help. This book is one of a wide array of materials available on the subject and will serve for reports as well as information for persons seeking help or understanding for themselves or a loved one. --Lois McCulley, Wichita FalFalls High School, TX (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

Gr. 7-10. Though not as specific as Maloney and Krantz's Straight Talk about Eating Disorders [BKL Ap 15 91], Moe's introduction supplies readers with a sense of the seriousness of destructive eating patterns in a format that is somewhat more approachable. Her writing is competent as she explains in general terms what characterizes bulimia, anorexia, and compulsive eating patterns. What will really draw readers into the text are the numerous cases Moe uses to illustrate her points, and she integrates most, though not all, of them into the discussion quite well. Like Maloney and Krantz, Moe considers the influence the media have had on cultural concepts about weight and explores eating disorders in the light of family relationships. She also offers practical coping suggestions, explaining how to set positive goals, and briefly discusses where to go for additional help. She rounds matters out with a good bibliography. No notes. ~--Stephanie Zvirin
