CHOICE Review

This report updates a 1970 document by the the National Research Council's Committee on Maternal Nutrition, Maternal Nutrition and the Course of Pregnancy, and is a critical evaluation of data on two issues relevant to healthy pregnant women living in industrialized countries: nutritional status and weight gain, and dietary intake and nutrient supplements. Clinical and research recommendations follow the critical review and analysis of the literature. The report on the first issue addresses the influence of nutritional status prior to and during pregnancy on pattern and total amount of weight gain, and also the role of the body mass index as a method of assessing nutritional status during pregnancy. The second report is limited to trace elements and vitamins for which a human requirement has been established, and to calcium, magnesium, and protein. Both reports include recommendations for black, Hispanic, and Southeast Asian women. Graphs and tables enhance the informational value of the report, and provisional weight-gain charts by prepregnancy body mass index are given in the appendix.
