Although the people whose stories appear in this book seem far removed from our lives, most have the qualities that E.M. Forster admires as part of the 'true human tradition.' We may cringe at the suffering that some of them endured--or contributed to--or at the violence that pervaded their lives. Still, we can empathize with the courage and ability that gave most of them the 'power to endure' through the 'cruelty and chaos' of nineteenth-century Latin America.

CHOICE Review

Consisting of 19 biographical essays, this work narrates individual efforts to deal with the political turbulence and violatile socioeconomic climate that characterized 19th-century Latin America. Editor Judith Ewell provides a helpful introduction; editor William Beezley, who wrote Judas at the Jockey Club and Other Episodes of Porfirian Mexico (1987) and edited, with Ewell, The Human Tradition in Latin America: The Twentieth Century (1987), contributes one of the essays. Several younger Latin Americanists as well as established scholars are among the other contributors. Their essays treat figures as widely diverse as Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, the mercurial Mexican dictator, and Emilio Coni, and Argentine physician who championed the cause of public health near the end of the century. Each of these lucidly written narratives includes a list of archival and secondary sources consulted. Although a useful resource for anyone interested in Latin American studies, the book is especially suited as a supplementary resource for advanced undergraduate courses in modern Latin American history.
