CHOICE Review
In Celtic literature and mythology the Irish material is the most extensive and oldest, predated in Europe only by Greek and Latin. Throughout Ireland's history attempts were made to destroy the language and culture, and this inevitably affected the continuity of the mythological tradition. In the 19th century the tradition was revitalized and popularized through the writings of such as Standish James O'Grady, Eugene O'Curry, and Douglas Hyde, who in turn influenced the writers of the Literary Revival. Ellis, a historian and novelist, has written widely on Celtic history and culture. His introduction, in which he describes the place of Irish mythology in the context of European culture, is readable and informative. The dictionary itself is by his admission aimed at the enthusiast and the lay reader but academics will also find it particularly useful. Ellis has done his work well in spite of difficulties posed by the spelling of names and by the variations in the versions of the tales. One is surprised by the absence of entries or references for Bruidean, Ces noinden Ulad, Longes mac nUsnig, etc. (The indication of pronunciation should be considered for a subsequent edition.) A helpful "Select Bibliography" is appended; however, literary works are entered under editor, e.g., Fled Bricred is entered under Henderson and three editions of Tain Bo Cuailgne are entered respectively under O'Fiannachta, O'Rahilly, and Strachan. The only comparable works are Peter Kavanagh's Irish Mythology: A Dictionary (1958-59; repr. Newbridge, Ireland, 1988) and Darragh Smyth's less comprehensive but also useful Guide to Irish Mythology (1988). Ellis's is a good ancillary to Irish and Celtic studies and should be in all academic libraries. -M. J. Durkan, Swarthmore CollegeNotas de autor provistas por Syndetics
