Voyages in Classical Mythology takes 44 great classical adventure tales of mythology and exploration and retells them in this beautifully written volume.

Organized by character or traveler's name, each entry includes a description of the voyager's life, their journey, alternate versions of the story, symbolism, cross-references, and a list of ancient sources. Each entry in Voyages in Classical Mythology is accompanied by a map, helping readers trace the routes of heroes and deities whose quests took them to such faraway destinations as Egypt, Sparta, Troy, and the Black Sea.

Tales include some of mythology's greatest moments, including Daedalus's trip to Crete, his entrapment in the labyrinth he designed, and the fateful flight back to Italy with his son, Icarus; Helen's voyage from Greece to Troy and back again; and Orpheus's journey to the Underworld to retrieve his bride. Voyages in Classical Mythology also includes a convenient glossary of relevant terms from Greek and Roman Mythology and a detailed index. The eloquent text makes the complex themes of classical scholarship accessible to a wide range of readers. Students and nonspecialists of any age will thoroughly enjoy these fascinating journeys.

Includes bibiliographical references and indexes.

Booklist Review

This volume retells the stories of the voyages of 44 heroes and dieties from Greek mythology, arranged from Achilles to Theseus. An introduction explains the importance of these stories to the ancient Greeks. It also explains that they are related here in the purest, least-embellished form, as they existed before the gods were renamed and given different qualities by the Romans. Snodgrass is a prolific author of reference books for young adults and librarians. Each traveler has a chapter that begins with a black-and-white illustration depicting the god or hero. These illustrations vary in style, and many are not attractive. A phonetic spelling is given after each name, and then the chapter is divided as follows: "Genealogy and Background" ; "Journey," which describes the voyage and what makes the subject's story important; "Alternate Versions," which gives some common variations on the basic tale; and "Symbolism," which explains symbols commonly associated with the subject and what they represent. Each chapter concludes with cross-references to other tales in which this subject appears and a bibliography of ancient writings in which this tale is told. Each also includes a family tree and a map showing where incidents occured. The book includes a glossary, a bibliography, a time line, and both general and geographic indexes. This book appears to be intended for the high-school student or adult. The illustrations would not attract younger readers, and the information is not presented in an entertaining manner. The book would be an excellent tool for the older student reading The Odyssey or The Illiad or the plays of Sophocles or for the adult trying to get some facts straight concerning familiar tales.
