CHOICE Review

Essentially a summary and synthesis of the work of Beavers and his associates, this book is based on systems theory and on the premise that all types of psychotherapy, including individual, should be variations of family therapy. The authors provide a nosology of psychosocial family health. Pathology is measured on a continuum from healthy to unhealthy rather than through use of categorical labels. Assessment tools for determination of family type are also described. The authors assert that these instruments have a high level of empirical reliability; they do not appear to recognize that this may result from training bias. Treatment focus is presented as based on assessment of family functioning. Successful Families has sound empirical and clinical foundations. It does not make impossible claims and should be well received in family counseling programs that are not affiliated with the traditional helping disciplines of psychiatry, clinical psychology, or social work. Social workers may question the minimal attention devoted to single-parent and low-income families. Adequate index, excellent bibliography. Upper-division undergraduates and above. -F. J. Peirce, emeritus, University of Oklahoma
