One of the most difficult challenges for today's mental health professional is helping clients who have human immune deficiency virus (HIV) infection or who have gone on to a diagnosis of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Understanding AIDS guides the reader through the complexities of the disease process, the course of medical treatment, and the psychological and social problems surrounding this dreaded illness.

CHOICE Review

Mental health professionals serving clients with HIV infection confront many challenges directly related to HIV disease processes, medical interventions targeting HIV infection and its associated illnesses, and the social problems within which HIV infection is often embedded. Because the medical aspects of HIV infection directly affect the psychological experiences of HIV-infected persons, available psychotherapeutic interventions must be sensitive to the biomedical aspects of the disease. For these reasons, the biological and medical aspects of HIV disease are the focus of the first part of this book, followed by psychological, neuropsychological, and social aspects. The final section reviews the coping processes exhibited by persons with HIV disease and the means by which mental health professionals may facilitate their adjustment. Kalichman provides a broad overview of HIV infection based on the empirical literature (more than 700 references are provided) for mental health professionals and on interviews with 63 men and women of diverse ethnic and HIV-risk backgrounds. Very useful glossary of medical terms and medications; directory of hotlines and other resources. An informative, timely overview of HIV disease in nontechnical terms. Highly recommended. All levels.
