Since 1945 the world has undergone vast and fundamental change. The collapse of colonial empires and the tensions of the Cold War produced great political turbulence in many areas and integrative movements in others. The end of the Cold War has triggered the breakdown of one of the superpowers and much turmoil elsewhere. To chart a way through these dramatic developments, leading scholars from Britain, Canada, the United States, and Australia present up-to-date surveys of the experience of the world's eleven geopolitical regions. They also consider the contemporary character of sovereign statehood, looking at both its enduring geographical and psychological bases and also at how it has been affected by economic interdependence and ethnicity. The result is an authoritative survey of the international scene during the second half of the twentieth century.

CHOICE Review

Jackson (Univ. of British Columbia) and James (Univ. of Keele) bring together the writings of British, Canadian, US, and Australian scholars on changes following the end of the Cold War. Essays deal with the legal-political developments which led to the emergence of sovereign national states as the primary world organizing entity, their geopolitical conditioning and implications (exceptionally well presented), and the ideological (psychological) factors involved in the process. Contributors attempt to present, in brief, 11 regional historical-political sketches. Specialists in these regions will undoubtedly, rightly or wrongly, take issue with both the schemes of regionalization and the weight accorded to the various areas, e.g., why Oceania is accorded as much space as Latin America or South Asia. The last part deals with the problems that currently confront the world system based on sovereign entities, such as growth of economic interdependence, ethnic conflicts, and economic and political imbalance between the weak and strong states. The book is a good starter for a graduate seminar in world politics. Upper-division undergraduate; graduate. L. K. D. Kristof; Portland State University
