CHOICE Review

The rapid global spread of democracy during the past decade has stimulated unduly optimistic expectations for the future in Latin America. Boron, a noted Argentine political theorist, questions many of the basic assumptions about democratization in a brilliant intellectual tour de force. He draws on a host of theorists from Aristotle forward to examine the nature of capitalism and its inherent weaknesses and self-contradictions. While skewering neoliberal economic thought and rejecting as unrealistic its belief that the state will necessarily shrink in size and importance, Boron is also sharply critical of both developmental and Marxist thought. He sets forth the imposing array of threats to democracy that confront Latin America today: institutional frailty, economic imbalances, an elitist tradition, authoritarian cultural patterns, and the gap between the poor and the wealthy. He describes the economic crisis of the 1980s and 1990s as aggravating social injustice, thereby adding to the challenges facing political democratization. Although skeptical about prospects for the future, Boron is unwilling to accept democratic social reform as doomed. Graduate; faculty. J. D.
