CHOICE Review

Feldman's book is a compilation of available data on earthquakes and volcanic eruptions that took place in Central America, between Panama and the Mexican state of Chiapas, from the 16th to the end of the 19th century. The author diligently searched out original reports, including many eyewitness accounts, and presents them in synoptic form in the language in which they were written. This means that most of the book is in Spanish. At the end of each quoted eruption report, there is a section in English that evaluates the reliability of the source. The book has some interesting historical maps and a few old plates of volcanic eruptions. The bibliography is extensive. The book, in essence, is a catalog-like listing of events, with no attempt at synthesis; this limits its use of this book to libraries that have a research interest in these natural phenomena.
