CHOICE Review

Davies presents a persuasive and timely argument for the need to include media literacy training in the formal K-12 school curriculum. He examines an impressive range of literature on the social, psychological, economic, and political effects of television, film, radio, music, advertising, print media, video games, and music videos. Individual chapters examine the relationship between student media use and learning, the impact of mass media on social and emotional development, and the effects of advertising on physical development and health. A particularly engaging chapter critically appraises myths created by and about the media. Practitioners and student teachers will appreciate the concluding chapters, which offer a rationale and a set of strategies for incorporating media literacy experiences into the curriculum. Readers looking for critical discussion of research design will be disappointed. The author reviews empirical findings and examines the implications of this body of knowledge for educational policy and practice. References and resources are extensive and well chosen. Although written for teachers and school administrators, the book should be of considerable value to upper-division undergraduates and graduate students seeking a clearly written, comprehensive, research-oriented introduction to the topic.
