CHOICE Review

Lacking the hallmarks of a traditional dictionary (phonetic pronunciation, syllabification, etymology), this source is intended for professionals to complement legal research and to illuminate the diverse world of working attorneys. While Redden's Modern Legal Glossary (CH, Mar'81) was concerned with the vocabulary of the law, this new work emphasizes terminology that affects or impinges on the law in such fields as business and finance ("cafeteria benefit plan"), medicine ("Papanicolaou smear"), criminal justice ("witness protection program"), institutions ("Sierra Club"), legislation ("Video Privacy Protection Act of 1988), environment ("overgrazing"), religion ("Armenian Church"), popular terminology ("burnout," "exurbanite," "baby boomer"), etc. A page chosen at random gives the flavor of the dictionary's scope: K.C. ("see Knights of Columbus"), K.U.B. (Kidney, ureter, bladder), Kabbaleh, Kangaroo court, Kansas City Board of Trade, Karma, Kasher ("see Kosher"). This dictionary is not meant to compete with standard law dictionaries--Black, Bouvier, or Ballentine--but to flesh out the information acquired through traditional legal research tools by providing an understanding of the terminology of related fields. Highly recommended for law professionals (attorneys, secretaries, paralegals, faculty, students) and law libraries. L. Holzhausen; Washburn University of Topeka
