School Library Journal Review

Gr 9 Up‘This well-constructed series entry explores such topics as the efficacy of Affirmative Action programs, whether or not America's justice system discriminates against African Americans, and the relations among Black, Asian, and Latino political powerbases. Viewpoints represented include those of Derrick Bell, Ellis Cose, Louis Farrakhan, Wanda Coleman, Lani Guinier, Pete Wilson, and Shelby Steele. Informational introductions set the stage for the opinion pieces. Thoughtfully arranged with excellent book and periodical bibliographies, this title will prove useful for report writers and debators, and will provide a good background to further reading of lengthier pieces, such as Nathan McCall's Make Me Wanna Holler (Random, 1994) and Shelby Steele's The Content of Our Character (HarperCollins, 1991).‘Kellie Flynn, St. Teresa High School, Decatur, IL (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

Gr. 8^-12. Two new volumes in the Opposing Viewpoints series take on urgent issues that are being discussed and debated by young people right now in the classroom and elsewhere. All the voices are contemporary; they bring an immediacy to the ideas and examples; and they express a wide range of political opinion, right, left, and in between. The volume on America in the near future focuses strongly on technology and how it will affect the family, education, economics, and the environment. The volume on race relations confronts the present climate of anger and discusses issues of class as well as ethnicity, debating the pros and cons of affirmative action, immigration, and self-segregation. An interview with Louis Farrakhan is followed by a discussion of hate speech and by debate about whether blacks and Latinos should form a political alliance. The full bibliographies of books and articles will help students read further. Two more titles are listed in this issue's Series Roundup. --Hazel Rochman
