CHOICE Review

Reproduced here is the first third of Kristeva's 1973 doctoral thesis about the change in poetic practice that occurred in France at the end of the 19th century. This opening section sets forth her theoretical views of ``textual practice.'' Calling on Husserl, Hegel, Marx, Bataille, Freud, and Lacan, Kristeva sets forth a basically neo-Freudian reading of how avant-garde literary texts function. Some scholars find her work genuinely innovative; others see in it a misguided eclecticism. She has had influence on other contemporary thinkers, and this more or less adequate translation is welcome if only so that American literary scholars can have easy access to the kernel of her theoretical work. Philosophers may also be interested in this work that, in criticizing Jacques Derrida, attempts to put a subject back at the center of writing. Extremely difficult and recommended only for graduate level.-A. Thiher, University of Missouri, Columbia
