CHOICE Review
Libraries should not rush to weed their copies of the 9th edition (1979): although this revision includes new terms reflecting advances in molecular biology and genetics, many of the deleted terms may not appear in similar sources. (Libraries holding Synopsis and Classification of Living Organisms, ed. by S.P. Parker, CH, Sep'82, need not be concerned by the deletion of many taxonomic names.) In addition, detailed etymology of terms is no longer provided. There are more than 18,000 entries--down from 22,500 in the 9th edition; expanded definitions and larger type account for the greater size of this volume. Appendixes providing brief outlines of the plant and animal kingdoms have been completely revised, with separate outlines of the Fungi and Prokaryotes added. A new appendix provides more than 60 selected chemical structural formulae. Offering much greater depth than other recent works such as Chambers Biology Dictionary (CH, May'90) and Facts on File Dictionary of Biology, ed. by E. Toothill (3rd ed., 1988; 2nd ed., CH, Jul'81), Henderson's Dictionary is highly recommended for biology collections serving upper-division and graduate students. -B. A.
