This volume presents US Congressional Committee assignment listings from January 3, 1947, the opening of the 80th Congress until January 3, 1993, the closing of the 102nd Congress. The format utilized for each collection of committee assignments is listed in order of their appearance in the volume: standing committees of the Senate, select and special committees of the Senate, standing committees of the House, select and special committees of the House, and joint committees of the Congress. Each membership roster contains a complete history of an individual committee for a given Congress, including: committee name and Congress, service dates, majority and minority listings, rank, name of member, party of member, state, terms in House/committee, terms in Senate/committee, period of service on the committee, notes (information explaining unusual circumstances concerning ranking and committee size), vacancies filled, additions, changes, and departures. Library Journal Review

First of a projected six-volume set documenting all the assignments to Congressional committees since 1789, this reference includes the committees that followed the Legislative Reorganization Act of 1946. Complete historical information is given for each standing and select or special committee, i.e., the jurisdiction taken from the Rules of the Senate or House and all the members for each Congress, including their rank, party, state, years in Congress and on the committee, and any changes in that Congress. Individual names can be accessed through the index. The membership lists were taken from the official Congressional Directory (GPO, 1947-) and confirmed in various official and commercial sources. One can certainly obtain this same information by going through each directory, but not as conveniently. Several commercial sources also list committee members --Politics in America (Congressional Quarterly, 1981-), Congressional Staff Directory (Staff Directories, 1959-), and Congressional Yellow Book (Monitor, 1976-)--but do not go back as far in time or cumulate the information. The Biographical Directory of the U.S. Congress, 1774-1989 (GPO, 1990) does not include committee composition, so for research collections lacking access to the historical directories or needing the convenience of such a compilation, Committees in the U.S. Congress is a valuable resource.-- Louise Stwalley, Univ. of Colorado at Denver Lib. CHOICE Review

The result of Nelson's extensive research on leadership recruitment and selection in the US House of Representatives, this first of a projected six-volume set covers congressional committee assignments for the 80th-102nd Congresses (1947-92). According to the introduction, Congressional Quarterly is committed to publishing the first two volumes; but it is unclear who will publish the remainder or what those volumes will contain. Volume 1 provides information concerning the jurisdiction and membership of congressional committees. While it is useful to have 46 years of data in one volume, this information is available in several government publications, including Congressional Directory. That ready availability and the high cost per volume of this work make it suitable only for specialized research collections with reference dollars to spare. D. Lee; Mississippi State University
