CHOICE Review

The economic and political history of Latin America would not be complete without an examination of the money doctors (the MDs). The MDs staff the invading army of economists and financial consultants who have advised Latin American nations on how to conduct their economic and political affairs in a fashion that would be attractive to foreign lenders. The thesis of the book is that while the MDs have often arrived at the same time as armies with a vastly different set of weapons, their influence on Latin American nations has been just as profound. Drake has done a truly admirable job of compiling essays on the MDs that span most of a century. The authors (including the late US Senator Paul Douglas, the late Scott Nearing, Albert Hirschman, and Roberto Frankel) will be familiar to Latin Americanists as well as a wider audience. Other than a well-written but brief introduction and some explanatory remarks scattered throughout the volume, Drake has allowed others to tell a powerful, intriguing, and important story. Must reading for anyone with an interest in Latin America or US policy towards Latin America. All levels. J. T. Peach; New Mexico State University
