CHOICE Review

Minogue's and Tansey's books have two things in common: both are beginning books on politics and both were published in Great Britain. Yet Minogue's book, which its subtitle rightly calls "A Very Short Introduction," is broader in scope. Surveying the history of politics from Plato to the present, it provides a good readable introduction to politics for beginners or a brushup for advanced students or faculty on areas too long ignored. Its bibliography of sources is a good if selective list of books about politics that college libraries should own. Tansey's book, although larger and more sophisticated with an impressive bibliography, is less useful outside Britain. His general focus, the examples he chooses, and his sources are all exclusively British. Although it includes journals, books, libraries, and even machine-readable sources, even his list of "sources on politics" is specifically limited to British students using British libraries and British sources. Both books are excellent introductory excursions into the thickets of politics, and both are intended for undergraduates but have sufficient scope to interest more sophisticated readers. Minogue is better suited for audiences outside Britain. General readers; lower-division undergraduates. P. Barton-Kriese Indiana University East
