School Library Journal Review

Gr 10 Up-A timely look at contemporary world problems. Similar to the ``Opposing Viewpoints'' series (Greenhaven), this title presents up-to-date, pro and con essays and articles on the benefits of nationalism, the historical and current causes of ethnic violence around the world, and the question of intervention by outside nations. A well-organized format includes a table of contents with article summaries, an extensive bibliography, a list of organizations to contact, and a comprehensive index. Many of the authoritative essays on nationalism are scholarly and overburdened with sophisticated vocabulary, while articles and interviews on ethnic violence in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, and the Arab world are compelling and at times gruesome. A challenging but nonetheless excellent resource for research or debate students.-Judy R. Johnston, Auburn High School, WA (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

Gr. 10-12. Part of the Current Controversies series, this collection of 41 short essays drawn from a variety of sources is arranged thematically into five topical chapters--"Is Nationalism Beneficial?" "Is Ethnic Violence Ever Justified?" "What Are the Causes of Ethnic Conflict?" "Should Nations Intervene in Ethnic Conflicts?" and "How Can Ethnic Conflict Be Prevented?" Within each chapter, a number of essays support two opposing views, except for the concluding chapter, which offers views by five different authors on the prevention of ethnic conflict. At the beginning of each article, authors are briefly profiled; most are academics, a few are journalists, and one is an inmate at the federal penitentiary at Leavenworth. The contents are very contemporary, focusing primarily on the Balkan War and European ethnic conflicts. There are, however, essays that address conflicts between religious groups in the Middle East and in India, the worldwide problem of anti-Semitism, and also the subjects of nationalism and ethnic conflict from a universal, global perspective. An effective page format includes boxed quotations that can pique reader interest. Bibliography; list of organizations to contact. (Reviewed June 1994)1565100808Merri Monks
