School Library Journal Review

Gr 5-8-- Although this book does not contain everything you need to know about step-families , as the overconfident title states, it is a useful beginning book on the topic. The type is large; sentences and paragraphs are short; important points are repeated; and numerous large boldface titles highlight the major topics of each section, creating an approachable, low reading level title. The decidedly pro-child author directly addresses readers, almost assuming the role of therapist--``You may see a stepparent as a threat to your special bond.'' Most of the major areas and problems are covered--single parent families, death or divorce tramas, blending two separate families, adjusting to step-siblings, or what name or title to use. Some absent topics, covered in Craven's Stepfamilies (Messner, 1982), are how to deal with holidays and extended families, sexuality between newly-married parents, and discipline from a step-parent. The comments from children age 13 to 16 ring true, but the black-and-white and color photos are staged. The consistently upbeat tone and the continual reassurances that with cooperation and compromise things will work out are a trifle unrealistic, yet Glassman is very supportive of readers and tries to explain in real terms how everyone's feelings are valid. --Karen K.
