Library Journal Review

This annotated bibliography provides broad coverage of the literature related to America's space program. The arrangement into general categories (e.g., Propul sion, Manned Spacecraft, Earthbound Support) results in an unavoidable repetition of many entries; however, the annotations are excellent, and the book will be useful for novice and experienced researchers alike. Although one wishes for more coverage of international space programs and for a more detailed bibliographic essay explaining, for example, that out-of-print titles in the NASA History series are available in photocopy from the National Technical Information Service (NTIS), this work admirably covers over 30 years of technical and general interest publications. Recommended for academic and large public libraries.-- Thomas Frieling, Bain bridge Coll., Ga. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. CHOICE Review

The problem with America in Space is a problem it shares with other current aerospace bibliographies: the index. The recent guides to the literature are very accessible for the knowledgeable user but less worthwhile for the uninitiated, for whom this "Magill Bibliographies" series is designed. For example, to find information about the first man on the moon one is required to know that the mission was part of the Apollo program, the kind of fact that may be lacking in the first-year college student's intellectual arsenal. Beyond the problems with subject indexing, the annotations make the volume suitable for the undergraduate library. Inclusion of an appropriate proportion of government documents may enhance the work's usefulness in depository libraries.-P. Heller, Norwich University
