CHOICE Review

Using colorful illustrations and an engaging and vivid writing style, Wheeler takes the reader into a world of space-time, gravitational waves, and black holes. As one of the foremost contributors to the study of general relativity, and as the person mainly responsible for the resurgence of interest in general relativity in the 1960s, he is well qualified to write such a book. Parts of the book are written like a novel, and other parts are personal narrative. For example, he describes floats passing him during a Rose Bowl parade, and shows how they illustrate a basic principle of physics. He also digs into the history of physics, showing that Apollonius of Perga discovered a key to black hole geometry. But most of all he describes and explains gravity and space-time in an engaging and interesting way. Spread throughout the book are boxes that give further details on some of the more complex subjects. Wheeler's poetry is also a colorful addition. And, finally, there are the illustrations--most are in color, and all are striking and beautifully done. Strongly recommended for all undergraduate readers. -B. R. Parker, Idaho State University
