Library Journal Review

This compendium has been produced under the joint sponsorship of the Smithsonian Institution and the National Academy of Sciences. The goal is to provide enhanced resources for elementary school teaching. The three main sections are devoted to curriculum materials in the major fields of science, supplementary resources, and other sources of information such as museums and professional associations. Descriptions of individual publications are detailed enough to be very helpful. This excellent book should provide a much-needed boost to elementary science education in the United States.-- Jack W. CHOICE Review

This guide to instructional resources is intended for teachers of science in grades kindergarten through eighth grade. Prepared by the staff of National Science Resources Center, a joint venture of the Smithsonian Institution and the National Academy of Sciences, the directory is divided into three major sections. The largest is a listing of about 300 published lesson plan guides, activity guides, and instructional materials. For each there is a 100-word description along with information on the format, grade level, cost, and supplier. A second section provides annotated lists of science activity books, books on science teaching, and science magazines for students and teachers. A final section is a directory of museums, professional associations, curriculum projects, and publishers, which would be especially useful sources of curriculum material for elementary science education. The volume is capped off with a number of useful indexes. The volume is up-to-date and thoughtfully arranged. Essential for libraries that support elementary science teachers and prospective teachers. -T. G. Kirk, Berea College
