CHOICE Review

Genetic conservation is an integral part of maintaining air, water, and soil quality to stabilize the global environment. Conservation of genetic resources insures that future generations will have the benefit of utilizing the earth's biological resources. (The US, as an example, is almost totally dependent on plants and livestock that are not native to North America.) It has now become necessary to minimize the risk of bringing in pests and diseases so, consequently, several countries including the US have adopted quarantine regulations, restricting plant and animal movement. In order to preserve our germ plasm, collections of this material in several countries throughout the world have begun and a network of international agricultural research centers is emerging to assist in this task. Part 1 discusses in situ conservation and its relation to "ex situ" conservation and the collection and management of germ plasm; identifying and evaluating useful variability and maximizing availability to breeders; biotechnology use and how it may affect germ plasm conservation; globally important genetic stock collections, problems, and safeguarding; conservation of microorganisms and problems in maintaining genetic stability; and protection of intellectual property rights, data banks, and establishment of global networks. Part 2 discusses policy issues such as quarantines and their implications; mechanisms and uses for intellectual property protection; international exchange of germ plasm; economic soundness of collection; and the preservation and management of these resources. General; upper-division undergraduate through professional. H. W. Ockerman; Ohio State University
