"Designed to serve as both a one-stop information source and a guide to in-depth exploration, this eye-opening volume examines the history, consumption, and availability of energy resources in America as well as the influence of energy on the development of modern-day society. Solidly grounded in scientific fact and environmental realities, it offers a sobering look at the current state of our energy resources, related government regulations, the reasons for our slow progress in developing alternative resources, and the economic and social problems that could arise from an energy crisis. This book promises no easy answers, but provides solid, useful information that will serve as a foundation for research, decision making, or simply an enhanced understanding of this critical subject."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. CHOICE Review

The Millers' new volume in the "Contemporary World Issues" series sets out to be a "one-stop information source and a guide to in-depth research" for investigation of the role of energy in American society in six chapters and an index. Chapter 1, "Energy: A Perspective," examines the history of energy, consumption, energy sources, and trends in national energy policy. Chapter 2, "Chronologies and Statistics," has chronologies for each type of energy source and statistical information covering all aspects of energy use and production. Statistics are presented in easy-to-read tables and charts; sources are cited. Chapter 3, "Laws and Regulations," lists and summarizes federal laws and regulations and offers some analysis of their effects. Chapter 4, "Directory of Organizations," lists five types of organizations: US government, US intergovernmental advisory committees, private US organizations, individual energy organizations, and international organizations. For librarians, the most interesting and useful section will be Chapter 5, "Bibliography," which contains lists of reference materials, books, articles, and government publications, and an extensive list of journal titles. Machine-readable databases are omitted, as are sources available over the Internet. Chapter 6, "Films and Videocassettes," lists films and videocassettes with short abstracts. The book is well indexed with many cross-references. It belongs in every public and academic library and in every research and corporate library that deals with energy issues. W. E.
