Costa, a freelance writer and researcher, has contributed this volume to ABC-CLIO's "Contemporary World Issues" series. Following the general format of its series predecessors, the work is intended to be a basic, one-stop resource, and also to serve as a guide for further research. The first three chapters cover the historical context of abortion from Greek times through July of 1991 and supply biographical sketches of key figures in the current abortion debate and facts and statistics, including information on laws, mortality rates, abortion techniques, incidents of harassment of abortion providers, and public opinion polls. The last three chapters are brief, annotated lists of abortion-related organizations, print and nonprint resources. A glossary of abortion terminology and comprehensive index are included. Within its space limitations, a very useful and needed compendium for general readers and college students from first year through graduate level who are beginning work on abortion issues or who need quick references.-E.
