CHOICE Review

Ingram and Associates present a collection of 21 essays divided into three parts that address major concerns of trustees and administrators of public colleges and universities. Part 1 begins with the origin and role of the citizen trustees and the importance of that role in administering public colleges and universities. The reader is then introduced to the practical issues confronting the management of colleges and universities including the changing demographics of students, financing higher education, legal constraints, and finally the importance of strategic planning. Part 2 addresses the key responsibilities of the governing boards, ranging from the selection and assessment of the president to the critical faculty issues of collective bargaining and tenure. Finally, Part 3 focuses on the role of trustee and establishes some practical suggestions for assisting the trustee in becoming effective within that role. Ingram and Associates have developed a very practical handbook for both lay persons in the role of trustee and the college or university administrator. The book is recommended for those persons as well as for students of higher education. F. C. Brocato; Georgia Southern University
