Booklist Review

This collection of original writing explores the questions, Is there life after death? and, if so, What's it like? Essays on reincarnation, communication with the dead, and panoramic vision are included in the discussion of evidence for an afterlife. A section on "The Challenge of Materialism" raises the issue of the relationship between memory and the brain and explores the question of a conscious self beyond death. The third section reports the views of the mystical traditions of the world that support the notion of an afterlife, and the concluding section, "The Transcendence of Death," argues that one's attitude toward an afterlife has a significant influence upon one's present life and relationships. While you can't count on these high-toned essays giving you specifics about the quality of life after death, they do deliver carefully reasoned meditations on the possibilities. --Sheila McGinn-Moorer
