Booklist Review

Gr. 6-9. "Guns are at the very core of the American way of life." Bernards' observation, presented convincingly in the introductory chapter on the gun culture in America, forms an important basis for understanding this controversial and timely topic. Effectively presenting both sides of the issue, Bernards examines many aspects of gun control in the U.S., including various approaches to control, how the Second Amendment (which affirms the right to bear arms) is interpreted, whether gun control reduces crime, and the status of guns and gun control in Japan, Great Britain, and Canada. The narrative is well done, and subheadings facilitate readers' understanding. Black-and-white illustrations include paintings showing colonists using their weapons to defend themselves against Indians and to fight the British as well as photos of crimes being perpetrated with guns. Also included are a few graphs and several cartoons supporting or opposing gun control. A glossary, suggested readings, and a list of works consulted add to the work's value as a solid introduction to the topic and an excellent resource that will lead to further study. ~--Karen Hutt
