This book presents an innovative study of cognition from a clinical point of view. From observations of patients' behavior, it illustrates and analyzes the disorders of the thinking process caused by focal brain damage or more widespread cerebral dysfunction. The disorders are organized in functional categories and integrated in the effort to outline a neural basis for thought processing. The author takes a broad view of this subject, ranging from sensory input to executive control of cognition and motor output. He uses striking clinical vignettes throughout the book to illustrate the various disorders, and discusses the case histories with respect to relevant literature. This detailed work provides an illuminating account of the neurological basis for components of thinking such as language, memory, visual imagery, and emotion. It will interest all who are concerned with the relation between brain and behavior, including neurologists, neuroscientists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and cognitive scientists.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 261-305) and index.

CHOICE Review

Eminent neurologist Benson presents a clinical, case study-based overview of cognitive processes and brain function. Although language, thought, reasoning, consciousness, and memory form its core, the book actually contains a wider group of topics than the title suggests, since there are chapters that discuss sensory and motor systems as well as a chapter on emotion. The author's approach to each of the subjects is to begin by presenting "axioms" or "postulates" about brain function and the chapter's topic (language, memory, etc.). Next, a brief overview of the topic is offered that focuses principally on the anatomical systems thought to be responsible for the behavior. Finally, clinical case studies are presented that provide the clinical evidence pertinent to the author's discussion. Although the approach to thinking here is traditional, it offers an interesting contrast to the approach associated with cognitive science. Benson's collection of interesting illustrative clinical cases is a valuable contribution and by itself makes the book worth reading. For neurologists and neuropsychologists. Graduate; faculty. D. A. Smith; Oberlin College
