CHOICE Review

This is the fifth volume of a series on issues in nursing by well-known nursing authors: the complete series will create a historical document that spans nearly 30 years of shifting issues within the field. The book is in three parts: professional issues, clinical issues, and societal issues. The authors note that both forces within the social context (e.g., technology, demographics, pandemic) and internal forces (knowledge-generating and utilization systems) have and will always continue to sculpt nursing's professional issues. Starting with a historical discussion regarding changes in nursing specialties and organizations (1900-93), the authors discuss variations in legal and ethical issues, changes in supply and demand of the nurse-worker, and shifts in thought-styles over time. The book's second part focuses on clinical issues such as child abuse, controversies in critical care, perplexities in adolescent pregnancy, midwifery, gerontology, and care of HIV clients. Each chapter is thoughtfully and nicely documented. The third section, broad in scope, discusses issues related to the environment, culture, and professionalism. A fine resource for undergraduate nursing students. D. B. Hamilton; University of Rochester
