CHOICE Review

Combining the most current theory and research on reading comprehension with practical application for classroom teachers, Maria has written a very useful volume for students and practitioners. Her personal experience with the techniques described lends credibility to her suggestions, and her use of first person on occasion makes the book very readable. This could be an invaluable handbook for practitioners, not only in the early grades where direct reading instruction takes place, but also in the upper grades when content teachers rely on functional reading. Particularly impressive are Maria's references to current state evaluation procedures for reading comprehension, some of which reflect contemporary theories of the reading process never before present in standardized tests. The book is divided into three parts: the first identifies the three components (text, reader, and teacher/school) of reading comprehension; the second details activities for pre-reading, during reading, and post-reading comprehension enhancement; and the third focuses on a total language arts program and comprehension assessment. An extensive bibliography and detailed index make this particularly useful as a reference. Highly recommended for graduate and undergraduate instruction in K-12 reading. -B. L. Nourie, Illinois State University
