CHOICE Review

Kimball conducted 75 one-on-one interviews with Washington correspondents, visited network newsrooms, interviewed Washington correspondents, attended press briefings, monitored the evening network newscasts (to match coverage against daily events), and sent out questionnaires. The result is this "inside" view of how the three major networks cover Washington for the evening news programs. Quoting extensively from interviews and from answers to his questionnaire, the author writes from the point of view of correspondents and producers. He supplements his research with his own ideas and experiences as a practicing journalist on newspapers, magazines, and television; he also draws from his 27 years of teaching experience in the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia Univ. The result is somewhat disappointing. There is a paucity of new information, and some of the facts suffer repetition. Kimball presents both sides of several situations but draws neither conclusions nor implications. The downsizing of network news, especially that from Washington and abroad, may have serious consequences for television news consumers--but it may not. One NBC New York producer asked the author, "Is there really a book in the ^D['downsizing^D]' of network TV news? Who cares?" The questions imply a fair assessment of the book. General readers; lower division undergraduates.
