CHOICE Review

This casebook was designed to enhance the instruction and use of applied demography, a field that over the last 25 years has become an important contributor to the strategic decision making of investors, corporations, nonprofit organizations, and governments. It consists of two short introductory chapters and 18 case studies of actual applications. Four chapters each address (1) political redistricting, reapportionment, and political boundary changes; (2) the analysis of markets for corporate expansions (e.g., motel chains); and (3) locational analyses for obstetrical services, automobile dealerships, fire stations, and long-term care facilities. The final six chapters treat a range of planning issues (e.g., enrollment projections) involving corporations, universities, and government agencies. Each case study carefully presents the problem, the steps of the analysis, and the statistical outcomes. Additionally, the cases reflect on the client-demographer relationship and the client's subsequent decision. Overall, this is a well-conceived collection with high quality, accessible, and informative cases. Strongly recommended for classroom use, and for libraries supporting upper-division undergraduate through professional audiences. R. A. Beauregard; University of Pittsburgh
