Library Journal Review

In the 21st century, organizations are going to operate differently from current paradigms. Exploring the ``firm of the future,'' Benveniste (education, Univ. of California at Berkeley) acknowledges that there will be fundamental changes in our concept of organizational structure. He explains six major transformations affecting organizations, his ``typology of error'' of dysfunctional organizations, and his ``meta rules,'' which will enable us to change the rules that exist. His image of the ``firm of the future'' helps us to grasp these powerful new ideas, which are being driven by real changes. Though his predictions are suspect, as with any forecasting, Benveniste's ideas are useful in dealing with the realities of the present and especially in helping with the numerous radical shifts occurring in how organizations operate. CHOICE Review

In this timely and practical book, Benveniste discusses six trends about the evolution of organizations that should help private and public policy makers develop competitive strategies for the future. These trends cover international competition, educational development, feminization of the culture, new technologies, and reduction of time from transformation of ideas into action. One strength of the author's approach is his use of relationships that have existed over long periods of time as basic foundations upon which to construct futuristic scenarios. Benveniste addresses the increasing education levels of the population and how this trend will influence the workforce and organizational development; he also addresses the increasing role of women in organizations and the impact of this change. Other topics include breaking commonly accepted rules and understanding the difference between an organization's outputs and outcomes as it prepares to meet the future.
