CHOICE Review

The third edition (2nd ed., 1986; 1st ed, CH, Nov'81) of this excellent, authoritative, and comprehensive compendium still has all of the virtues of the first edition and now a lot more. There are major revisions in the text, and the center section, composed of beautifully printed color illustrations of species, has been increased by 24 pages, allowing 44 more species to be included. The 62 line drawings also help in identification. The sections on taxonomy have been expanded to include more contemporary views of orchid biology, systematics, classification, and diversity. Descriptions of 140 genera and more than twice that number of species have been added in this edition. Examining an individual genus entry provides classification and descriptive information, geographic distribution, name derivation, taxonomy, the type species, and culture conditions. This book remains the leader in its field and is a most valuable reference for anyone interested in cultivating orchids. A must for libraries having a readership interested in gardening and horticulture.-L. G. Kavaljian, California State University, Sacramento
