CHOICE Review

An authoritative taxonomy written by 20 specialists that delineates to a fine and current degree each recognized species of living mammal. In updating the 1st edition (1982), 171 species have been added. Three of the newly added species, chosen at random, are not found in either Walker's Mammals of the World (5th ed., 1991) or Grzimek's Encyclopedia of Mammal, (CH, Jun'90) suggesting more complete coverage in the present work. Maximum content for each entry consists of: species Latin name; namer with source and year of publication for the original description; place where the specimen was found; geographical range and status of the species; synonymous names (a feature useful for tracking literature over time); and comments on taxonomic history. This source is not as well known as Walker or Grzimek, possibly due in part to its lack of common (English) names or illustrations. Incorporation of common names into the index and entries would greatly expand the usefulness of this source as a reference tool. Nonetheless, a valuable and unique compilation, necessary for in-depth reference collections. L. Bronars; Yale University
