Booklist Review

Experience as a biology teacher and as an editor serve Avraham well in his lucid, well-organized consideration of the circulatory system and the current state of cardiovascular medicine. Brief historical background precedes a look at the intricate system (blood gets a separate chapter) that discusses its structure, operation, and the ways in which it can malfunction, including a description of what occurs during a heart attack. Other sections consider the theory as well as the pharmacological and the technological advances at the crux of today's treatment of heart disease. A closing chapter explores how elements like smoking, stress, cholesterol, etc., enter into the arena of cardiovascular care. Medical terminology is carefully introduced in the text, and black-and-white photographs and drawings are included. A glossary, a list of additional readings, and an index are appended. No notes. Part of the Encyclopedia of Health series. Gr. 7-12. -- Stephanie Zvirin
