In this new edition, Weir retains the topics from the first edition (CH, Sep '78): truth telling, defining death, nontreatment of newborns and adults, euthanasia, and suicide. However, few articles are retained: Duff and Campbell on newborns; Maguire on euthanasia; Szasz and Scheidman on suicide. Lost from the first edition are Gustavson's, McCormick's, and Ramsey's religious classics on limits to treatment. New material includes an overview as well as excerpts from at least one court case for each section. But overview explanations of the cases are too sketchy to make the court-record excerpts illuminating reading. The second edition seems more medical/legal and less rich in ethical range than the first. Fine index, nice graphics, this new edition is handy and readable for undergraduates.
