CHOICE Review

This book presents a comprehensive view of both the conceptual and practical aspects of the counseling, or ``helping,'' process. Following an opening overview of principles and issues, the text focuses on five major stages of the helping process: relationship building; assessment; goal setting; strategic interventions; and termination and follow-up. Intervention strategies are broken down and discussed in separate chapters in four areas: affective, cognitive, behavioral, and systemic intervention strategies. Each chapter includes a summary, exercises, discussion questions, and recommended readings. Sample dialogues are frequently used as well as numerous figures and tables. The authors are professional counselors and educators. Their text is remarkable in that it may be used easily in the classroom at undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as serve as a source of fresh ideas for working professionals. The writing is clear, concise, and always interesting; the book is accurate and informative without being pedantic. Compares favorably with older books on the topic, e.g., Helping People Change, ed. by F.H. Kanfer and A.P. Goldstein (1975; 3rd ed., 1986).-L.S. Gillikin, Hampton Counseling Service
