CHOICE Review

Paul and Clark, both univesity agricultural scientists, have developed a book of 14 short chapters, designed for upper-level undergraduates. They begin with an overview of the field of soil microbilogy and biochemistry, how it developed, and its prospects for the future. In the next four chapters they define the soil as a habitat and discuss the organisms that inhabit it. The remaining chapters describe the dynamic processes within the soil, centering on the major nutrient cycles involving microorganisms, including the important role played by mycorrhizas; there is a disappointingly short chapter on the microbial transformation of metals. Written in a typical textbook narrative style, the book is extremely well illustrated with high-contrast tables, graphs, chemical reactions, and line diagrams. References, at the end of each chapter, are many and current. The glossary is very short; the eight-page index seems adequate. Should find a place in the library of evey college and university serving students in biology, ecology, or agriculture. -H. N. Cunningham Jr., Pennsylvania State University, Behrend College
