In the same format as his earlier book on Samuel Palmer, Samuel Palmer and ``The Ancients'' (CH, Jul '85), Lister's new volume contains descriptive, individual essay-style entries for 75 Blake watercolors, relief etchings, pen-and-ink drawings, and tempera paintings drawn from important collections worldwide. An introductory essay traces biographical events of Blake's life, quoting passages from Blake's writings as compiled by Geoffrey Keynes two decades ago. This text serves as an excellent small introduction to Blake's thought and best work. It does not supersede the vast literature (more than 2,000 items) in the Blake field, but it does pull together in concise form essential knowledge about Blake's life, his technical methods, and his spiritualism. Explanations regarding the allegorical and symbolic content of the illustrated work are well written and informative. Fully illustrated in color with plates that are clear and of good quality.
