Practical Handbook of Marine Science, Second Edition, provides comprehensive coverage of significant developments in marine biology, marine chemistry, marine geology, marine pollution, and physical oceanography. Containing more than 500 pages of selected physical, chemical, and biological reference data on the ocean environment, the book investigates current knowledge and recent advances pertaining to the sea. It addresses natural phenomena in estuaries, lagoons, continental shelves, continental slopes, continental rises, abyssal regions, mid-ocean ridges, along with neritic and pelagic waters of the ocean. The book also examines in detail anthropogenic effects on estuarine and marine ecosystems from local, regional, and global perspectives.

Includes bibliographical references and index.

CHOICE Review

This handbook (1st. ed., 1989) presents quantitative data describing the seas, their inhabitants, and the interactions between environments and biota, in tabular and graphic presentations taken from original sources or up-to-date review papers. Four sections, each of about 100 pages, provide basic information on physical, chemical, geological, and biological oceanography. A more applied fifth section, new to this edition, covers marine pollution. Texts presenting the main concepts and terms of the subfield begin each section. These are tightly written but clear and accessible to upper-division undergraduates. However, the main reference data sections use special terms that are not defined, and are pitched mainly to professionals familiar with the vocabulary of the field. Examples of data tabulations in each section are physical oceanography: physical properties of sea water, horizontal and vertical circulation, and waves; marine chemistry: elements and organic compounds in sea water and in marine organisms, carbon and nitrogen cycles; marine geology: plate tectonics, deep sea sediments, and hydrothermal vents; marine biology: plankton abundance, distribution and composition, and productivity of different habitats and trophic levels; and marine pollution: sewage and eutrophication, effects of major individual pollutants, and radiation in the sea. Extensive bibliographies in each section total about a thousand references. Upper-division undergraduate through professional. A. J. Kohn; University of Washington
