Purpel . . . ably complements the economic and political focus of critical pedagogy by shedding new light on spiritual and moral dimensions of public discourse. His book is a welcome addition to the literature in that it articulately scrutinizes the interface of culture and education and attendant trivialization of school reform. . . . CHOICE Review

Purpel (University of North Carolina at Greensboro), who is coeditor of Moral Education: It Comes with the Territory (1976), ably complements the economic and political focus of critical pedagogy by shedding new light on spiritual and moral dimensions of public discourse. His book is a welcome addition to the literature in that it articulately scrutinizes the interface of culture and education and attendant technical trivialization of school reform. Purpel eloquently focuses on the mythos of middle-class consciousness in a Socratic and prophetic search for meaning, purpose, and sacredness. His teachers are not William Bennett or Chester Finn, but rather Socrates, Moses, Jesus, Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Walter Brueggemann, Abraham Heschel, and Paulo Freire. Purpel's mission is to foster passion for community and compassion instead of atomistic individualism and competition. While his marvelous book offers only several examples of just schools, it enormously enriches a still-unfinished dialectic. With a helpful bibliography and index, it is an excellent acquisition for upper-division undergraduates as well as graduate students. J. L. DeVitis SUNY at Binghamton
